Hey John Dear Mowing Club!!
What a name. I love it.
SO, hyello from the USA! Please pardon the random out reach here but I’m Eric and I run a music marketing agency in NYC called The MuseBox.
I was just perusing the SXSW acceptances, and saw that you guys have been confirmed to play this year. I then realized that I’ve been lingering on your myspace for a few days now. The music sounded fucking amazing! It reminds me of a cross between Josh Ritter, Beirut, Ron Sexsmith with some The Guggenheim Grotto mixed in.
Great news on the SXSW acceptance! Will this be your first trip to sxsw? I was wondering if you could give me an idea of the band’s profile in the US? Do you guys have a manager set up over here?
Long story short, we're a music marketing agency and I'd be super interested in chatting if you're looking for a real push on this side of the Atlantic. We've got offices in Toronto, New York, and Austin, so we're very well equipped to assure that your band makes as big a splash as possible at SXSW. We also have a KILLER staff of A LIST music industry veteran publicists and online specialists, etc. I’ve attached a company bio for you to check out if you are interested. We can also help get shows for the band around the sxsw date.
Anyhow... I’d love to speak to you more about John Dear Mowing Club and what we have planned for SXSW. It would be great to chat on the phone if you have a chance.
Thanks and hope to hear from you!
PS – LOOOOVE the daniel johnston vid on your myspace. I hung out with him and his dad in 98. What a trip
Hey Eric,
Thanks for your interest in John Dear Mowing Club.
Last year we played with Daniel Johnston all over Europe as his support an backing band. A great and strange time.
Since the SXSW acceptance i'm looking and mailing around to get more out of our trip to the US.
There's always is a possibility of playing in bars and small venues in the US, but without a management or label I think it's not really worth the effort.
At least there should be some kind of plan.
In the US I don't know no one in the music business. So we've got no management and no label overthere. In Europe we work with a small label.
I'm very interested in playing in the US, also around the SXSW date because I think there is interest in my music overthere.
I'm staying in New York from 8 till 14 februari, than I make a roadtrip.I'll be back in NY from 4-till 7 march for an exhibitition at the Pulse-Art fair where some of my drawings will be showed. Then I'll go the the SXSW festival.
So, that's it so far. I sure like to hear from you and hope we can work something out.
Maybe you can tell me somthing about the way musebox works.
I'm not much of a 'phone talker' so i hope you'll get an impression.
All the best,
Melle

Great to hear from you. Yes, Daniel is so amazingly cool. There is nobody like him. For all his, well, mental problems he really is the consummate artist.
Anyway, yes, we’d love to work with you guys. I’m really excited that you wrote back. Our company does a bunch of promotional services – Publicity, Public Relations, Online Marketing, CD Distribution (through EMI Distribution), Music Supervision, Lifestyle Marketing, and DJ servicing. The thing that seems the most appropriate to you is the online marketing and the Project Publicity.
Also, I understand what you’re saying about the industry and all. We can help. Did you read our company bio and all? We are very connected staff who are ensconced in the core of the music business as the result of years in the trenches at record labels, etc. This is a help when trying to get your tunes to managers, music attorneys, publishers, record labels, music supervisors, etc.
Plus, I think you’re right to want to push your music in the US. The competition here around SXSW is incredible so it’s prudent to try to enter that scenario with some sort of profile and buzz.
Check out the attached document. We have a SXSW promotional package that we’re doing for some UK and Canadian bands that hit us up for help with their voyage to SXSW. Regarding SXSW specifically, the issue is that we’re starting now for many of these bands because it’s so competitive and we’re helping some bands book shows out to SXSW. The closer you get to the date the harder it is because stuff gets booked up. I’m having some conversations with venues and bookers on Monday to get some bands shows, etc. Let me know if you are interested in being included in that, etc.
I’d love to meet you when you’re in town too man. You should come up to the office. We split office space with A to Z Media who is a boutique CD manufacturing company, something that might come in handy when you get your stuff on lock for the US territory.
Anyway, email me back to let me know what you’re thinking. If you want anything regarding sxsw promo and shows, let me know ASAP, like tomorrow if possible.
Thanks man

Hi Eric,
For a moment I thought your interest was real.
Checking my myspace and write some personal things was a good way to get my attention.
I can't afford buying promotion in packages. There is a lot of money to earn with my band but it has to be an invest and risk for all involving parties. Managers invest money in bands because they know they can make money with a band.
When musicians have to pay a 'management' in front, for these kind of services. Only rich musicians get promotion.
Eric, please look a the movie 'Great World of Sound'.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0826547/
You guys look a lot more professional but the're are a lot of similarities in the working methot.
Make a living with music is a dream. And dreaming people are easy to fool. You say, give me your money and I'll make you a star. When it doesn't work out, you can hide behind a thousand exuses but you still have my money.
So let me do YOU a proposition.
You pay the 7000,00 dollar for the Full Primium Package for my band. I'll do the best I can, write great songs an perform with all of my heart.
Prove that YOUR methot works! I'll be a little bit famous and will earn more a lot more money than I'm earning now. I'll swear I'll pay you the 7000.00 dollar back! no better!, to prove my loss I'll pay you 10.000,00 dollar!
Do we got a deal?
Let me know,
Best,
Melle

Whoa.
I’m not sure what has prompted such a negative – and frankly incredibly offensive - response.
Why would you think my interest is not sincere? Please advise.
Do you think it’s not possible for it to be sincere because we are a marketing company that gets paid by bands and labels that we select? That’s what we do. That’s what all marketing companies do. That does not mean that we aren’t sincere in our outreaches or that we’re not music fans or that we’re not sincerely trying to contact and promote bands we like.
It is a shame that you’ve cast aspersions on me and The Musebox because I expressed interest in your band and offered our promotional services.
Good luck to you.
Dear Eric,
I'm not negative nor offensive. On the contrary, I believe in my music. It brought me a lot of good things.
You did offer me promotional services when I pay you a whole lot of money. I can't afford your services, so I made you an offer.
But you didn't respond to this proposition. MAYBE because you do not believe in music but in business deals, SO prove me I'm wrong.
If you believe in your business take this chance! I promise you won't regret it.
Let me know,
Best,
Melle
First off, it is indeed offensive to imply that my queries and our interests aren’t sincere. Would you not be equally as offended if I impugned your sincerity about your music?
Secondly, regarding your proposal, I’m afraid that it’s just not appropriate to what we do. We are a service company. Our cash flows and strengths as a company are built around providing promotional services for a fee. This is what all services companies are built around. You might get one service company to take a risk and work for free for you for a few months, in hopes that when you get signed that company will hire them. These situations are rare and most service companies don’t do this for obvious reasons. Similarly and unfortunately we are not in a position to do this type of arrangement with ANY band right now.
Kind regards,
Eric
Eric,
Thanks for you Answer.
I would not be offended when you impungned my sincerety about music. Because I know what I believe in.
In your first mail you did not talk about the business deal you want to make. It was just to get my attention. When I resonded enthusiastically you responded with these packages for a lot of money and I felt like a fool. I really need some help in the US, but not this way. It feels not right.
Secondly, I'm very sorry my proposal didn't work out. It would be a great example for your company to prove it is not just packages you sell. It is an opportunity to show these packages actually work!
I guess i have to look for a company that will take a risk. A company that will take a risk for an unknown Dutch band (wich Dutch band is not unknown in the US?) Got any suggestions? You see...I'm still positive
Thanks in advance!
Best,
Melle
